A Scottish Ceilidh in Madrid
As chief organiser of the BritishSpanish Society Burns Night Supper it was a relaxing change for Trustee Bran Douglas to don his tartan and take his seat without worrying whether all was going to plan for a Scottish dinner at the invitation of British Ambassador in Spain Sir Alex Ellis and Lady Ellis. After a whisky cocktail and a sung rendition of The Selkirk Grace, a favourite Burns song/poem, by the Reverend of St George's Church in Madrid, Canon Sal McDougall, guests were seated for a dinner comprising of smoked salmon served with a wonderful English (Sussex) white wine made mainly from Chardonnay grapes, aged in oak, followed by a delicious haggis with whisky sauce, accompanied by BSS member, Norrell Robertson MW´s lovely red, Manga de Brujo wine. Cranachan with shortbread followed with coffee, which guests fuller than they wished to be as they were enticed to dance the Ceilidh. The wonderful Ceilidh band summoned guests to the dance floor, led by piper Hamish Binns, and his wife Susi who called the dances. It was a thoroughly lovely evening with a rich mix of Scots, Irish, English and Spanish guests all coming together to celebrate a traditional evening of fine food and music in the lovely surrounding of the Ambassador's Residence, with a roaring fire in the corner reminding everyone that the weather was still more Scottish than Spanish.
